We took to Bauhaus to celebrate 70 years of Porsche sports cars at BierGruppe 001 on June 8th, 2018.

Porsches + Beer = BierGruppe. This simple formula is one we’ve supported for years now, and for 2018, BierGruppe employed it with great effect celebrating Porsche’s 70th birthday.

Bauhaus Brew Labs hosted the party at their brewery. Originally built in 1905 by Crown Iron Works Company, the large industrial atriums and glass-roofed brick buildings of the former foundry gave the event a decidedly european feel.

The event was organized by Luis Fraguada and Chad Person. Both Chad and Luis have been integral parts of our local Porsche community for years, and BeirGruppe showed just how well they know our community.

The party was set to officially begin at 5:50p – an homage to the 550 Spyder we assume. We pulled in around 5p to get ourselves situated into our space.

Seven months we’ve waited for this weekend. Spring Fling 2018 has arrived and happy to report it was well-worth the wait.

2018 marks our 4th season supporting Porsches at BIR. With each year, our crew grows and the setups develop further.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 911 991 997 996 993 GT3 CupSport

This season brought with it a nice variety of Porsches old and new to the 311RS Paddock.

Some familiar faces – Luis’ 996 GT3 has been with us each of the four seasons for Spring Fling. His car has further evolved for 2018 with a GT3RS front bumper and a carbon decklid.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 997

Some new faces – Rich swapped his 997 Turbo for a 997 GT3. The car came to us with 31,000 miles and good bones. With time and some elbow grease, Rich had himself a great platform to continue development of his driving skills.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 997 993 CupSport

And some faces that have evolved – Jean’s 993 has gone through a winter-long transformation from a wholesome 993 C2 into a track weapon we call the CupSport.

Center-lock magnesium Speedlines from a Supercup, custom JRZ RS Pro dampers, and a 150lbs weight loss regimen only tell part of the story.

His target laptime for the weekend was a sub-1:50. Having ran a 1:55 last season, the target seemed within range with some time on the new setup.

Read more on the car here.

The cars were loving the fresh spring air. The tires too, tire temps are much easier to manage when air temps stay below 70*.

Luis’ 996 GT3 was cruising all weekend. We’ve worked to dial in his setup over the past four seasons, focusing on chassis development and driving dynamics.

This season our focus was cutting weight from the platform – 50lbs was removed by way of carbon fiber hood, RS front bumper, and removal of unnecessary interior bits such as glove box, sun visors, and airbags.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 993 CupSport magnesium Supercup Speedline wheels

On the other hand, we have Rich’s 997.1 GT3 on track with us for the first time. His GT3 is equipped with solid baseline setup that will develop as he and the car grow together.

Currently he’s running solid bushings, Recaro Profi XLs with harnesses and a roll bar, wider Sport Cup 2s up front, and a pair of FVD side muffler bypasses.

These shots are from the braking zone into Turn 10. It’s interesting to see how each of the cars settle into the corner differently under hard braking. The cars on stock dampers tend to dive a bit, while the CupSport on our JRZ RS Pros stays relatively flat.

A pair of our 991 GT3s enter the banked apex of Turn 10. The chassis setup on each is similar, however the lead car #990 runs our 19″ BBS E88s with wider F265 & R325 Sport Cup 2s.

Driving the two back to back is interesting. The cars feel similar but the added grip of the 19″ setup is felt under braking and corner entry, leading to a ~1.5 seconds per lap advantage.

Here the banking though Turn 10 is evident. From here the cars load up and slingshot onto the mile-long front straight of BIR’s Donnybrooke configuration.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 993 CupSport magnesium Supercup Speedline wheels

The main straight makes use of the NHRA 1/4 mile drag strip that BIR is most well-known for.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 993 CupSport magnesium Supercup Speedline wheels

While unique, the dragstrip and the rubber laid down upon it, make for a hairy situation in anything other than perfect sunny conditions. The rubber becomes slipperier than ice with slightest bit of moisture.

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 993 CupSport magnesium Supercup Speedline wheels

Thankfully thatt was none of our concern for Spring Fling 2018. The conditions made for consistently fast laps throughout the weekend.

This shot is right at apex of Turn 1 at ~135mph. Nice panning work, Peter!

311RS at BIR PCA Spring Fling by Peter Lapinski Porsche 991 911 GT3 BBS E88 993 CupSport magnesium Supercup Speedline wheels

BIR’s high-speed Donnybrooke layout has a tendency to eat the driver’s side tires if not managed properly.

The new center-lock setup on Jean’s 993 CupSport calls for a 330 ft/lbs torque spec. A big number, however it’s simple enough using the specialized torque wrench we use for the 991 GT3s, which themselves are torque’d at 440 ft/lbs.

Finally! Having missed each of the four previous Luftgekühlt gatherings, Luft5 would be our first time experiencing the spectacle that is Luftgekühlt.

And boy was it a spectacle.

LC1_3596_SM

As described on the Luftgekühlt website:

The Luftgekühlt brand is the brainchild of two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and noted Southern California creative director Howie Idelson.

A true Porsche happening, Luftgekühlt is an experiential car culture event centered around a tightly curated list of historically significant or interesting cars, both race and street.”

Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 10.07.23 AM

Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 10.05.59 AM

Each of the previous Luftgekühlt events had been held at a unique location. 2018 would be no different.

Luft5 was held at the Ganahl Lumber Yard in Torrance, CA. A seemingly odd location choice, however with the team behind Luftgekühlt it should come as no surprise we were in for a treat.

The cars were incredible. And so many of them! 600+ air-cooled Porsches. To do the event justice we’ll save complete Luft5 coverage for another journal entry.

LC1_3691_SM

Luft5 would be held on April 22nd. And for us, the timing could not have been more perfect. Two weeks prior to the event, we had completed work on one of our winter projects – the 993 311RS CupSport 3.8. The moment the car hit the ground we knew…

“This thing should be at at Luftgekühlt.”

993 311RS CupSport 3.8 at Luft 5 by Larry Chen

No small feat considering Luft5 had been sold out for months, not to mention we’re based in Minnesota, roughly 2,000 miles away from California.

However, thanks to the gracious owner of this 993 CupSport along with the creative logistical work by Roy Sewell at Beacon Shipping Logistics, the idea didn’t seem all that far fetched.

The final hurdle was cleared with help from a friend. A few messages later and it was done – we had the green light from Patrick. The CupSport was a go for Luft 5!

993 311RS CupSport 3.8 at Luft 5 by Larry Chen

We arrived at Luft5 for load in at 7a. And who is the first person we see? None other than Larry Chen. Larry has been a friend for years now, since 2009 Super Lap Battle at Buttonwillow actually!

Having photographed most of our milestone cars, it was fitting we find each other in front of the CupSport.

The CupSport is all about refinement. Factory-level look & feel, with modern day grip and chassis development. Details are plentiful, weight is minimal.

For instance, the magnesium center-lock Speedlines we run on the CupSport look similar to their 5 lug counterparts, however they weigh ~50lbs. less.

We’d like to extend a special thank you to Patrick Long for his consideration, as well as those who made our wild cross-country idea a reality. Each of you made our year and it was an honor to be a part of Luftgekühlt, thank you.

The 993 311RS Cupsport 993 continues our tradition of using the race track to develop focused road cars. With the 993 CupSport program, we’ve pushed our track developed, street prepared philosophy further than before.

Debuting at Luft5, it’s the start of the development process that will lead to unit production of the 993 311RS CupSport. Using a 993 Carrera 2 as the platform, the 311RS Cupsport is delivered as standard with a 3.8L and optionally with a big-bore 4.0L flat six.

One of the design briefs for the 993 311RS CupSport program is to deliver a laptime faster than a factory 993 Supercup, running our standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 street tires. This focus on pure speed is not without regard for road use. The Cupsport is delivered a standard with a full interior utilizing RS carpet and set of JRZ dampers valved for a wide range of control, road of track.

The 993 311RS CupSport program is only possible with cooperation between our technical partners, for which we’re eternally thankful. Contributing to the 311RS Cupsport program are the following partners: Michelin, Porsche Motorsport, JRZ Suspension, Recaro, BBi Autosport, BMC, Girodisc, & Rath Racing.

Otherwise known as the Wienermeister!!! And proud of it by the looks of it.

What is Oktoberfest without  hammerschlagen?

It’s imperative not to spill any beer during a game of hammerschlagen. Do so, and it’s immediate disqualification.

Back inside, the Wienermeister was enjoying the fruits of his labor and washing it down with another cold Two Hearted Ale.

It was fun to get a look under this immaculate 1973 Carrera RS. When we say immaculate, it’s true – the car was restored at the factory by Porsche. Rumor has it, upon completion Porsche themselves attempted to secure it for the Porsche Museum. Thankfully the owner chose otherwise and now we’ve the honor of looking after the car.

Speaking of immaculate, the Minnesota Singer commission was on hand for us all to enjoy. There are not enough hours in the day to pour over all the details Singer builds into their cars. What an inspiration.

We’re back to HQ from another great weekend at the track. This would be our final visit to BIR for the 2017 season and we sent the year off with a bang. Supporting 9 Porsches, two more than ever before, here’s how it went down.

311RS Paddock by Peter Lapinski

The newly minted 311RS Paddock was put to good use during the weekend, providing much needed shelter from the rain on Saturday. Ryan’s 930 was relegated to the sidelines to make room for our supported drivers.

This weekend we had two 997.1 GT3s on hand. Both street cars, they’ve been prepared with a focus on track use with components from our technical partners. Recaro, Michelin, Girodisc, & more played a role in getting them dialed in.

In addition to the 997s, we had two 991 GT3s in the paddock with us. This Sapphire Blue example is a new one to the crew, but it’s quickly picking up speed.

We’ve got the car setup with an effective safety package consisting of: BBi Autosport roll bar painted Sapphire Blue, Recaro Profi XL seats, and HANS Schroth harnesses. The car has also had it’s chassis massaged with a focus on improved drivability on track.

The car was finished off with a fresh set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

We’ve been working on the initial setup on John’s 993 over the summer. As he’s picked up speed, the car has started to show us where we need to focus over the winter. For this weekend, our goal for him was to get a baseline lap on the books.

The cars cleaned, lugs torqued, it was time to get out on track.

The two 997 GT3s were first out and immediately found each other on track. Together, they spent the session working their way through the traffic of Group 2.

Speaking of traffic, Gumer found himself in the thick of it with his 991 GT3.

b20

John was on it early, besting his previous best lap time during the first session of the weekend.

We’ve got more than a few winter plans for this car. The way John has connected with this car made it clear which path needs to be taken – we’re headed to Grip City.

Out in Group 3, Bruce was crushing it in his 991 GT3. While the car may appear stock, it is far from it. The setup on the car has shaved 5sec over stock.

The sun broke for the later sessions on Saturday. Luis took full advantage and finished the day off right. We’ll leave with a selection of images from Peter Lapinski, enjoy!

This summer 311RS #05 became the first of our 11-unit production run to change hands. It was originally delivered to a local client just miles from HQ. Now with it’s new owner, Ross, #05 will reside in Dallas, TX.

Prior to taking delivery, the new owner took the opportunity to upgrade the car. Quite significantly in fact. Before we delve into the details, here are a few images of the car as it arrived from the original owner.

The car was originally spec’d for use on track hence the roll bar, Recaro buckets, harnesses, etc. Ross also intends to use the car on track and chose to further focus the car in the form of chassis & weight savings upgrades.

The biggest upgrade was a first for us – we installed AMS’ dry carbon roof on the car. Ryan’s Time Attack Evo X runs a similar setup, however this would be the first time we’ve fitted a carbon roof to a production 311RS unit.

The result was a 4lb. weight reduction from the highest point on the car and a killer look to boot.

The next focus was on chassis control – Ross upgraded #05 from the original JRZ RS1s to our latest 2017-spec JRZ RS Pros. These dampers feature external reservoirs which allow the user to control compression and gas pressure. In combination with rebound control featured on each JRZ, these RS Pros allow for complete control of the platform.

Here’s a look at the JRZ RS Pro canisters mounted in the trunk of 311RS #05. We’ve placed them out of the way yet within reach for easy adjustment.

Inside the car, the Nardi wheel was replaced with one of our alcantara-wrapped factory wheels. The alcantara trend continues with a full interior upgrade, which features alcantara covered A, B, and C pillars, headliner, and color matched plastic bits.

311RS Evo X #05 Volk Ce28N JRZ Michelin JDP engineering voltex MN Ryan Gates AMS carbon roof wooden Ebrake

If you’re upgrading anything on the interior of a 311RS Evo X, you better be including one of our wooden ebrake handles. They are just too good. In combination with our black watch tartan fabric, the interior feels properly old school.

We never tire of working with Akrapovic’s exhaust systems. They are light, sound right, and are gorgeous. Ross upgraded #05’s AMS system to a lightweight titanium Akrapovic dual tip system.

The red Brembo calipers that come standard on Evo Xs turn to brown after a few uses on track. Our solution is to refinish them with a high-temp gloss black paint. Our logo is then screen printed onto the calipers for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Each of the upgrades plays a role in the complete finished product. 311RS #05 was gorgeous when it was first delivered in 2014, but today it is another thing all together. Congratulations to Ross and we thank you for the opportunity to work with one of our babies again.

And just like that, 311RS #05 was off to it’s new home in Dallas, TX. Until next time!!

Our 2017 series following Porsche’s new 911 RSR takes us to Road America. Fresh off their maiden victory at Lime Rock, the new RSR’s were primed for a good result at America’s favorite track.

Enjoy this selection of Peter Lapinski‘s images from the weekend.

Porsche finished P6 & P7 after a fierce late-race battle for the win pushed them towards the rear of the class. Another great race to watch, the RSRs are getting fast.

We’ve partnered with Brainerd International Raceway to create the 311RS Paddock. A home base for our testing, track support, and driver development.

For years, this covered space has functioned nicely as our working space at BIR. The concrete is flat, there’s power, and most importantly a hose for car washes nearby. Visually however, the structure needed to be spruced up.

We saw this as an opportunity to partner with BIR to improve the facility while creating an identity for ourselves at our home track.

311RS Paddock Porsche BIR Brainerd International Raceway Sherwin Williams Emerald pain Porsche 997 991 GT3

The process began with a thorough cleaning. From there the poles were refinished with satin white and the bare corrugated steel was coated with satin black. We used Sherwin Williams Emerald exterior paint for both surfaces for a lasting finish – thanks to the recommendation from our neighbors at New Town Painters.

And voila – the 311RS Paddock at BIR. Some elbow grease and a few coats of paint really transformed the structure.

The following weekend we had our first opportunity to utilize the 311RS Paddock. The space houses 7 cars without hampering workflow. A successful first test.

It’s awesome to have a place to call home at the track we grew up driving. Our next event is the 14th-15th of September with PCA and the 311RS Paddock is filling up quickly – drop us a line to reserve your spot for the weekend.
